Headway Gippsland—Individual Social Support Groups

  Headway Gippsland Inc.

Text Box: Caring for people with acquired brain injury and their families.

Young people with acquired brain injury spend many months, sometime years in hospital and rehabilitation.

When returning to their homes they find that friends have moved on and that the lack of understanding by members of the community causes  them to become socially isolated.

This is a common problem for people who acquire a brain injury and the Social Support Programs aim to address this problem by providing programs to  enable them to access community activities with encouragement and support.

The programs provide an opportunity for friendships to be formed with people who understand their difficulties.

Program days are on Mondays from 10 am to 2 pm at the Tennis Club Rooms, Wentworth St, Wonthaggi.

Activities have included water colour painting, cooking, Tennis, bowling, pool, craft, guest speakers and outings.

The dynamics of this group are excellent promoting healthy social interaction & enjoyment of each others company.  Our goal is to seek new activities as well as building on those already in place.

Headway Gippsland Social Support Programs

The Social Support Service focuses on social skills development and maintenance through recreational activities for consumers with ABI and provides assistance in accessing social options available in the community.

Programs are provided by highly qualified Coordinators. Volunteers are provided with training to enable them to play a vital role in the programs.  Training is provided on an ongoing  basis to all staff and volunteers within the organisation.

The activities of each program are determined by the participants at planning days held every six months,  giving them the opportunity to develop new skills or expand on previous enjoyable experiences.  Each program is then developed within its budget constraints.

Each group has an opportunity to mix with other programs during the annual meeting, camps, joint group activities and special events.

Headway Gippsland has a fully equipped camping trailer which has been used for the social support group participants.

Fee Structure: Participants are required to pay an attendance fee of $5.00 per session, plus the cost of some activities.  The attendance fee is based on the  guidelines of the Department of Human Services.
